Supermassive Black Holes

Our studies of supermassive black holes span from their large scale environments to photons circling at the edge of the event horizon. The supermassive black hole group is a part of the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration and the LISA Consortium, along with several international teams that coordinate multi-wavelength (and multi-messenger) programs to characterize these systems and probe fundamental questions including

* is general relativity valid in the strong-gravity regime?

* how are jets launched?

* what physics governs accretion flows near the event horizon?
